How can I whiten my teeth safely and effectively?
Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that can help improve the appearance of your smile. Here are some safe and effective methods for teeth whitening:
- Professional Teeth Whitening: The safest and most effective way to whiten teeth is by getting it done by a dental professional. Dentists use higher concentrations of bleaching agents that are safe for your teeth and gums. This can be done in-surgery, or with take-home kits provided by your dentist. We at Freo Dental prefer the results achieved by the take-home kits. We simply do a quick 3-D scan of your mouth; and about a week later your trays and gels are ready to take home. Generally most people get results within 2 weeks of treatment; and the results will normally last 6 months; after which you can top up.
- Whitening Toothpaste: Whitening toothpaste contains mild abrasives that can help remove surface stains. They are suitable for removing superficial stains, however do not provide significant results for deep stains. The other issue with whitening toothpastes is the highly abrasive nature of them can rapidly wear down good healthy tooth enamel and root surfaces.
- Whitening Strips and Gels: Over-the-counter whitening strips and gels can be effective for some people. Follow the instructions carefully and avoid overuse, as excessive use may cause tooth sensitivity. They are also very temporary; often creating an optical illusion for a few hours.
- Whitening Mouthwashes: Whitening mouthwashes are the least effective on their own for significant whitening; and there are no clinically effective whitening mouthwashes on the market.
- Healthy Oral Hygiene Practices: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to remove surface stains and prevent plaque buildup.
- Avoiding Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks: Reduce your consumption of foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-coloured berries.
- Rinse After Consuming Staining Substances: If you do consume staining substances, rinse your mouth with water afterward to minimize their effects.
- Use a Straw: When drinking beverages that can stain your teeth, use a straw to direct the liquid away from your front teeth.
- Quit Smoking, Vaping or Chewing Tobacco: Tobacco products can cause severe teeth staining. Quitting can improve the colour of your teeth and significantly benefit your overall health.
- Consult with Your Dentist: Before trying any teeth whitening products or procedures, consult with Dr Kris. He can assess the condition of your teeth and recommend the most suitable whitening method for you.
Keep in mind that the effectiveness of teeth whitening can vary depending on the individual's natural tooth colour and the cause of discoloration. If you experience tooth sensitivity or any adverse effects during the whitening process, stop the treatment and consult your dentist. They can provide appropriate guidance and ensure that your teeth whitening is safe and effective.
